So you're planning on heading out for an adventure using RunHunters but aren't sure how long the battery will last? It's not an exact science but here are some guidelines and tips to help you understand how best to manage your phone battery life.
Navigation apps that use GPS generally use anywhere from 10-20% of your phone's battery per hour. This lines up with our RunHunters testing where we've dropped into suggested low power mode on iPhones if you've been using the app for more than 4 hours.
Extreme heat, cold and even altitude (likely due to cold) can also reduce battery life significantly. Battery duration will depend on the type and age of the phone you're using.
Recommendation. If you're heading out for a big day and are carrying a small pack with additional snacks and gear it's worth taking a small portable charge-pack for peace of mind. We definitely recommend popping it in a zip-loc bag to reduce the risk of it getting wet.
Common sense suggests that if you are heading deep into the back-country then plan ahead sensibly. Always consider worst case scenarios. Consider taking a map and compass (if you know how to use them), personal locator beacons (PLB's) or purpose built GPS devices.
